Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is the most visible unit within the Ocean Gate Police Department. They serve the residents 24 hours a day 365 days a year. These officers respond to approximately 5,000 calls per service each year. The Patrol Division handles first aid calls, motor vehicle crashes, request for police services and motor vehicle enforcement. The mission of the Patrol Division is proactive patrol, traffic enforcement and crime prevention. 

Specialized Units

Traffic Safety Unit

The Ocean Gate Police Traffic Safety Unit responsibility is the investigation of motor vehicle crashes and enforcement of traffic laws throughout Ocean Gate. In addition, the Traffic Safety Unit provides service and expertise in the following areas:

  • Fatal/serious motor vehicle crash investigations
  • Conducting follow-up hit and run investigations
  • Pedestrian and school safety
  • Full time and seasonal crossing guard management
  • Review of all construction projects and work zone site inspections in Ocean Gate
  • Signage requests/replacements


Another primary function of the Traffic Safety Unit is prevention, detection, and apprehension of impaired drivers. All officers assigned to the Traffic Safety Unit receive specialized training in DWI Ocean Gate Police Department includes 1 officer trained as Drug Recognition Experts (DRE) who are specially trained to detect drivers who are impaired on substances other than alcohol.


All members of Traffic Safety Unit receive specialized training in crash investigation. This training includes classes in advanced crash investigation, crash reconstruction, motorcycle, pedestrian, commercial vehicle crash investigation, and traffic engineering. Members of the Traffic Safety Unit are also members of the Ocean County Traffic Officers’ Association and the New Jersey Police Traffic Officers’ Association.

bicycle patrol unit

The Ocean Gate Police Bicycle Unit consists of 3 assigned bicycle officer's who are primarily responsible for community policing patrols in the beach and boardwalk area. Additional officers are trained and assigned as needed to supplement patrol operations. 


Bicycle patrol provides greater visibility in areas that are more difficult to patrol by motor vehicle. Bicycles offer an effective approach to crime surveillance and detection. While on bicycle patrol, officers can have greater interaction with citizens.
